In addition to judging, Bas is the founder of BBPress, an international publishing house which focuses on high quality dog books.

Bas's interest in dogs goes back to his early childhood where he was allowed to take a subscription to De Hondenwereld (the very same magazine he would run later as editor-in-chief), but it was his after-school job as a kennel hand in the Mastiff kennel of Bert van de Vorst (Sanguis Nobilis) that led him into the "dog game". Bas spent countless hours sitting at the kitchen table and discussing dogs with Bert and his friend Louis van de Meeren, breeder of Bloodhounds under the Oeienbos affix. Bas considers himself very lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from these two old fashioned doggy people, his mentors.
With that appreciation and a recognition that proper education is the key to success for purebred dog fanciers, Bas has decided to share the knowledge that he has gained over the years, in the form of educational seminars.
Bas has given seminars and judge training on many breeds such as Bulldogs, Bullmastiffs, Dogues de Bordeaux, Mastiffs, Neapolitan Mastiffs and Tibetan Mastiffs; Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs and Pugs; Basset Hounds and Bloodhounds.
The seminars are designed bearing in mind that to achieve the most profound understanding of breed type and the standard one has to study similar breeds, the same breeds that have a similar heritage and/or have been used as out-crosses. What is highly typical in one breed is totally wrong in a nephew breed and vice versa.
Bas has decided to offer educational seminars to help breeders and judges achieve their goals of understanding correct breed type - to share his knowledge and the ability to recognize correct breed type and also to preserve it, at the same time not losing quality of general structure.
